A Grasshopper definition (that's what a working set of components is called) has to be saved to stay with you and the world. Other than Rhino3D's generic files the format is .gh. Theoretically, Grasshopper files are independeant from Rhino3D files. In practice, there are 2 scenarios, though:

Grasshopper's ghx file format is essentially a xml file format which is searchable (although Xml isn't fully optimal for the code inside script components), and plain xml is also suitable for storing text files in version control systems (VCS) and DIFF tools can spot differences between versions.

You can use GH_IO.dll to open almost any file grasshopper produces. It'll give you a typesafe hierarchical dictionary representing the file, and you can always save to xml if you prefer that format. GH is a binary format, meaning it stores its data as pure bytes. This makes the file unreadable by human eyes and also rather difficult to parse by programs. Data inside GH files is however stored quite efficiently -i.e. with little overhead- and it is even compressed using standard Deflate compression, reducing the file size even more.

How to open a GH file. You can open a GH file in Grasshopper, which is included with McNeel Rhino (Windows, Mac). To open Grasshopper, enter grasshopper in Rhino's Command: field. After Grasshopper opens, select File โ Open and open your GH file. Then, you can edit the program your file contains and link it to the geometry in a 3DM file.

Grasshopper files have a .gh file extension and in order to import or open it, you can either click on that small green folder icon or you can simply drag the file from Windows Explorer and drop it onto the canvas. Depending on the file size, it will either load instantly or it would take a couple of seconds.
